How Ryde Works
Unlike traditional ride-hailing apps, Ryde operates by allowing users to post their travel requests directly on the platform. These requests are then visible to various car service providers, who can browse through the available opportunities and apply to fulfill the ones that match their preferences and capabilities. This approach gives users access to a broader selection of options while enabling car companies to choose the requests that best suit their schedules and resources. Ryde's model fosters a competitive environment, ensuring that users receive tailored offers from different providers, enhancing their overall travel experience.

Understanding the users
Initially, I aimed to gain a deep understanding of the users, so I prepared a comprehensive survey and shared it with various limousine companies. The survey received 17 responses, providing valuable insights into the user needs and expectations. Additionally, I conducted interviews with 4 individuals to gather more detailed, qualitative feedback. Here is the list of questions that were included in the survey and interviews.
Interview questions Examples:
What is the size of your car rental fleet?
What are your primary reasons for using the social panel (e.g., adding friends, sending messages, checking notifications)?
How do you typically interact with online platforms for managing your rental fleet? (e.g., accepting bookings, communicating with clients)
Can you walk me through how you would typically handle a new rental request using your current tools?
How do you currently use data and analytics in your business operations?
What specific types of data or insights would be most beneficial for you to see on your dashboard?
Survey questions Examples:
What is the size of your car rental fleet?
How long have you been in the car rental business?
What is your primary customer base?
How often do you use online platforms to manage your car rental business?
Which devices do you primarily use to manage your business? (Select all that apply)
What are your biggest challenges when using online platforms to manage your car rental business?
How satisfied are you with the current tools you use for managing your car rental business?
User Persona Summary
Based on the insights gathered from the interviews and survey, I developed a persona to better understand and imagine the diverse needs and motivations of different users and guide the design process to ensure that the final product meets their expectations. Here is a summary of the persona analysis.
Ahmed - Small Business Owner
Ahmed manages a car rental company with 10 vehicles. He handles customer service, fleet management, and marketing himself, aiming to increase bookings through platforms like Ryde. His main challenges include time constraints and the need for an intuitive interface. He prefers a simple, easy-to-use dashboard with essential features like filtering options, notifications, and performance analytics.
Sarah - Operations Manager
Sarah is the Operations Manager at a medium-sized car rental company with 50+ vehicles. She oversees fleet management, driver coordination, and customer satisfaction. Her goals include efficiently managing multiple requests, tracking application statuses, and analyzing data for better fleet utilization. Sarah needs a productivity-enhancing dashboard with advanced filtering, detailed analytics, and effective communication tools.
Karim - Corporate Account Manager
Karim is a Corporate Account Manager at a large, globally-operating car rental company with 200+ vehicles. He focuses on securing high-value bookings for business clients and VIPs, using platforms like Ryde to expand reach. Karim needs a sophisticated dashboard that supports complex operations, detailed client management, and advanced reporting to maintain his company's premium service standards and client satisfaction.
Information Architecture
The information architecture (IA) for RydeFleet Dashboard is designed to provide a clear and intuitive structure that addresses the needs of different user personas. Hereās IA that includes main sections, sub-sections, and key features:
Wireframes
During the ideation process, I collaborated with the team on creating wireframes to visualize potential layouts and interactions. Initially, we brainstormed and sketched out several rough wireframe variations, focusing on different ways to address the issues identified in the user stories. We held iterative review sessions, where team members provided feedback and suggestions, allowing us to refine the wireframes progressively.
Delivering Design
Homepage
The Ryde platform's homepage is designed for quick trip applications and easy access to upcoming trips. It features a list of system-recommended trips, an overview of the companyās weekly earnings, and a summary of ongoing and upcoming trips, all in a streamlined layout to optimize the admin's efficiency.
BrowseFeed
The Ryde platform's browse feed displays offers in two categories: Travel and Scheduled. Admins can sort these offers by price or date and filter them by location, destination, or date. Special indicators highlight previous customers and special offers, making it easy for admins to identify and prioritize them.
Trips
The trips flow in the Ryde platform allows admins to seamlessly view ongoing, upcoming, and completed trips. It provides a clear overview of each trip's status and progress, ensuring that admins can easily manage and track all trip requests from start to finish.
Fleet
The fleet page on the Ryde platform lets admins monitor the status of cars and drivers, ensuring smooth operations. Admins can easily add or remove vehicles and use filters to sort cars by location and price. This streamlined management tool helps maintain an optimized and organized fleet.
Earnings
The earnings page on the Ryde platform provides admins with key company stats, including the most rated car, top-rated driver, and an earnings summary. It also allows admins to browse through invoices, check their balance, and manage billing details, ensuring a comprehensive overview of the company's financial health.
Conclusion
In conclusion, the first version of the Ryde platform has successfully laid the foundation for a user-friendly and functional application tailored to the needs of limousine companies. The project involved in-depth user research, persona development, and the design of key features such as trip management, fleet oversight, and financial reporting. Through this process, I learned the critical importance of incorporating user feedback early and often. Testing the initial version revealed several areas for improvement, leading to numerous updates and refinements. This iterative approach underscored the value of continuous user engagement in creating a platform that truly meets the needs of its users.
